I remember when they first touted this service a couple of years ago (I can't remember how long exactly) I tried it out and placed an order for htpc case they had. I see Microcenter still hasn't "improved" this whole concept of "reserving" your order for pickup. Sorry to bring this thread up again after a month but I had a good laugh at this. What started out as a magical adventure to my new favorite store ended up being a terrible hell-ride of incompetency. What's the point of "reserving" and item if they're just going to sell it to someone else? What kind of miserable company sends you an email confirming that your items have been pulled off the shelf and put in holding for you if they don't even have some of them? This was my worst experience with any store, and Microcenter has lost any future sales from me or positive words. Once I get to the parking lot the rage in my heart is really starting to burn. I didn't want to be that customer that throws a big fit in the middle of the store so I thanked him for his time and effort and quickly made my way out of the store. "We get in weekly shipments so you can come back and we should have both of them next week" he tells me. "We never had that part in, I don't know how it let you reserve one" he tells me. Looking a little worried the manager comes back to me saying that the processor I wanted sold like crazy and that they were all gone, so I asked him about the motherboard that I also came for and he went to check his computer. He calls some sort of manager to the desk, and when she arrives she calls another manager to the desk. He proceeded to walk to the back where my items were being held, I started to think about how easy this whole process is when he comes back to me empty handed. but in person! After some perusing I made my way over to the 18 minute pickup counter, gave the clerk my name, and showed them my e-mail confirmation. Now I've never been to a Microcenter before so waling into this large store filled with computer equipment was heavenly for me, it was like Newegg. I take my time getting ready for my big day, with my new top-o-the-line Sandy Bridge build and head towards Microcenter to pickup my items. and see an email from Microcenter that confirms my "reservation" and informs me that my items are being held and I have until Wednesday to pick them up. I make my reservation for a 2600K and a ASUS P8P67 Deluxe around 4A.M. So I stay up Saturday night and wait for the SB SKUs to go live on the Microcenter site so I can get my reservation in early. With this option you "reserve" items that your store has in stock adn they hold it for you, so I can sleep in AND get my 2600K with $90 instant rebate? AWESOME. I checked my local Microcenters hours (11-5 Sunday) and started to plan to get there a few hours early to make sure I could be first in line for e 2600K, but then I found the nifty 18 minute in-store pickup option. So I started to get all pumped up for the Sandy Bridge release, and even more pumped that I now live by a Microcenter and can go pickup my parts rather than wait for shipping. The rhinoceros is a ‘habitat modifier’, meaning that as it walks through the dense Javan rainforest, it establishes trails, controls plant growth, disperses seeds, and fertilizes soil. The Javan rhinoceros is a prime example of such a species, demonstrating how entire ecosystems are linked and that humans, animals and environmental health are intertwined. The definition of ‘key species’ varies between biologists, but for most of them it means a species that plays a pivotal role in their ecosystem such that their complete extinction would change its habitat and impact all organisms that rely on it, forever. Each year, this commemoration promotes a new aspect of wildlife conservation, and this year’s theme is Recovering key species for ecosystem restoration. So why should you care about the sounds a rhinoceros makes in a small island in Indonesia? That is a fair question, and precisely why the United Nations celebrates World Wildlife Day on 3 March. This field of study allows researchers like me to ask questions like: Do rhinoceros ‘speak’ in a certain way during breeding season? Does a large number of aggressive vocalizations between male rhinoceroses in close proximity to each other mean that the species’ habitat is reaching its maximum capacity? Do gunshots recorded in a national park indicate active poaching of endangered species? If we played a recording of calm voices of an adult female rhinoceros to a rhinoceros during its translocation to a new habitat, will it reduce overall stress levels of the animal? For now these questions are still too advanced for us to answer, but early pilot studies look promising. ![]() For endangered species like the Javan rhinoceros, bioacoustics can give insight into basic knowledge of the species otherwise unknown. While most people think of wildlife vocalizations as simple bird songs or a dog’s bark, animal vocalizations are a large part of “bioacoustics”, the study of how sound is produced, distributed and received in animals. From very early and limited pilot studies we were able to distinguish several different vocalizations made by the rhinoceros, like the soft ‘moo’ call of the calf to the mother rhinoceros or the loud and aggressive trumpet call between unsure adult male rhinoceroses as tensions escalate. My main project with Javan rhinoceros was piloting research into their voices using automated microphones. I spent three summers in Indonesia working on projects to support Javan rhinoceros and the communities that border their habitat. The Javan rhinoceros is unique because an individual has not been in captivity for over 100 years, and the entire species has a total global population of less than 80 all residing in a single national park in Indonesia. I was a second year student when I first heard of the Javan rhinoceros, which like the other four species of rhinoceroses on Earth, are large mammals with horns atop their nose which are often the target of illegal hunting. ![]() My work with the Javan rhinoceros began when I was an undergraduate student at Cornell University in the United States, and was invited to participate in a summer-long project where I partnered with a veterinary student to gain international experience in conservation research. I am fortunate enough to work with some of the most threatened species in the world, including the Javan rhinoceros ( Rhinoceros sondiacus), which is considered to be the most critically endangered land mammal on the planet. ![]() But most days I read scientific literature, plan projects from afar, analyze data and communicate with other scientists from around the world on the status of our collaborations. It boils down to an impossible choice: Do you neglect the infrastructure needs and, while avoiding excessive debt, all but guarantee the departure of your top job creator? Or do you make the upgrades and, by doing so, accept a great deal of financial risk? Kerry Spivey, public works director for Williamston, wonders what would have happened if stakeholders had not invested in the MCRWASA, though he acknowledges the difficulty of the town's situation. Division of Water Infrastructure estimated North Carolina's water and sewer infrastructure needs over the next 20 year range from $17 billion to $26 billion. As a result, many of those towns today have substantial deferred maintenance needs. ![]() Many North Carolina towns faced similar situations in the 1990s and early 2000s when textile and furniture mills were shuttering left and right.ĭozens of towns saw their largest property tax payer and utility rate payer – sometimes making up a quarter of those revenue streams – gone overnight. Williamston's story is only different in that its loss and its investment were relatively recent. Without a long-term solution, they're simply enduring the situation for now to keep costs to customers as low as possible. The county's debt has also cut into its ability to market the plant or allocate funds to other economic development initiatives. Designed to meet the needs of a large industrial customer, the water system is an immense resource, and, as Chesson admits, Williamston is hard-pressed to find a company that needs as much water as the plant produces. ![]() The size of the water system only exacerbates the problem. "One of our biggest issues is when you have so many people on fixed incomes, it's really hard for people on fixed incomes to pay a $125-a-month bill," said Chesson. Chesson said the town and the county are doing everything they can to come up with more solutions to such a hefty financial problem, but that it's been "really tough." ![]() Williamston and the county have limited options when it comes to offsetting the costs of running the MCRWASA, and, as a result, resident's water bills are high. "The poverty rate is at 29 percent and we're losing 1 percent of the population each year, which is not unusual for rural communities in northeastern North Carolina." "Martin County is a Tier One county and it is the 13th most economically distressed county in the state," said Al Chesson, mayor pro tem of Williamston. The loss of Parkdale has the town, the county and residents still bearing the brunt of a financial burden that stakeholders and citizens don't really know what to do with. And without that industrial customer, the costs would soon be unmanageable. Parkdale Mills was Williamston's largest water customer, using up to 35.6 million gallons of water in a year. The $27 million investment it put toward MCRWASA's expansion proved excessive once Parkdale Mills announced the shutdown of its local operations. Wiliamston and Martin County looked at several alternatives together and chose the Roanoke River water treatment plant – keeping in mind that it had Parkdale Mills to support. Additionally, saltwater was creeping into the aquifer and posed a threat to its cleanliness. The prized asset of Williamston's infrastructure is the Martin County Water and Sewer Authority, which was built to address state regulations that required the county to diversify its water resources and reduce its reliance on groundwater from a cretaceous aquifer. are beyond the control of the local community." "However, there are many factors that large corporations consider when consolidating operational footprints and maximizing profits. "Williamston and the county put an aggressive retention incentive on the table for Parkdale, which would have netted the company significant savings in terms of water expenditures and future taxes," said Jason Semple, president and CEO of Martin County Economic Development Corporation, in a press release. The town and county did all they could to keep the company. Parkdale Mills shut down its Williamston location in June 2017, and its closure created what Martin County Manager David Bone described as "ripple effects throughout the community." Williamston's story is like many others around the state. This is what happened to the town of Williamston after the exodus of Parkdale Mills, a world-leading yarn manufacturing company. The exodus took the industry and left an unworkable situation in its wake – a massive infrastructure framework without a massive industrial customer. Over the past few decades, however, those mills and the textile jobs have moved away, reshaping North Carolina's economy. North Carolina cities and towns made these costly investments throughout the 20th century, and the economy benefited greatly from it. |
